This post is weird, but some people have been giving feedback that my motorcycle is starting to look like a science project and not a dirt bike. I am here to say and comment that my TaoTao TBR7 is a dirt bike.
I plan to make the necessary changes to have my dual sport motorcycle start to look like it fits playing in the dirt. These upgrades included better off-road tires ( What Are The TaoTao TBR7 Tire Sizes? – FAQ ), handguards, a skid plate, etc. I will keep you guys updated about the dirt-bike-specific upgrades I do to the TBR7 motorcycle, but still, please read on.
I’ve been playing with mods and upgrades ( My TaoTao TBR7 Upgrades To Do List ) and transformed my TBR7 motorcycle into something much different than what I started with. So when I see people on forums and FB groups ask about the TaoTao TBR7, I realize my TBR7 is much different now, and my answers to their questions should reflect that.
What Is The TaoTao TBR7 Is and Isn’t?
Some common questions about the TBR7 motorcycle. Here they are, with what I learned so far to be true about this great motorcycle.
Is the TaoTao TBR7 250 A Fast Dirt Bike?
My TBR7 motorcycle is my first motorcycle, so it’s the fastest I’ve ever owned, but fast no. I have friends with litter bikes that can out-accelerate and outrun my little motorcycle. So…
How Fast Is A Tao Tao 250 Dirt Bike?
About 60 mph seemed to be my top speed running the motorcycle stock. And this was pushing the little engine. High revs, flats or downhill and tucked.
Due to the low gearing of the stock sprockets(front and rear), it can hit up to 60 mph as a top-end speed, but the motorcycle seems more suited for slower speeds and climbing hills.
How Big Is The TaoTao TBR7 250 Engine?
The TaoTao TBR7 250 motorcycle has an engine displacement of 229 cc’s. It’s a simple four-stroke, single-cylinder air-cooled engine.
Who Makes The TaoTao TBR7 250 Motorcycle?
On the MCO (Manufacture’s Certificate of Origin), the TBR7 250 Motorcycle is made by Zhejiang TaoTao Vehicles Co, LTD.
Is TaoTao A Chinese Brand?
Where Is the TaoTao TBR7 250 Motorcycle Made?
Yes, Zhejiang TaoTao Vehicles Co, LTD is a Chinese company. Manufacturing facilities are located in Jinyun County, Zhejiang Province of China. All since 1985. The TaoTao TBR7 250 is a Chinese Dual Sport.
Is TaoTao A Good Brand?
TaoTao products sometimes get a bad name, and TaoTao makes an incredible line of utility-style ATVs, Scooters, and dual-sport motorcycles. More importantly, people often buy TaoTao vehicles, and many share great stories about their adventures.
The TBR7 250 motorcycle is no different. The price is affordable, understanding there might be quality control issues. However, everyone that buys the TBR7 seems to upgrade parts and push the motorcycle to its limits. Only to share great stories and how much fun owning a TBR7 is.
The TaoTao TBR7 250 motorcycle has almost a cult following. Its owner group almost brad about what they can do to the bike, and it keeps running.
Is The TBR7 A Good Bike?
You can read my blog and my adventures with the TBR7, but simply.
The TaoTao TBR7 250 is a very affordable motorcycle, loaded with great potential to meet the rider’s needs. Out of the box ( TaoTao TBR7 Review & Specs: Out Of The Box ), the moto4rcycle runs and wants to climb hills. That being said, the TBR7 is a blank slate for upgrades and mods to meet the desires of the motorcycle owner.
So, is it good? Yes, it has been a great first bike for me and offers both on-road and off-road capabilities.
Is The TBR7 Motorcycle Street Legal?
From the advertisers:
The TaoTao TBR7 250 is road legal in all states except California. The TaoTao TBR7 motorcycle features a headlight, brake light, and turn signals needed to allow this motorcycle to be street legal.
Is The TBR7’s Engine The Same As The Hawk 250’s Engine?
The Hawk 250 and TBR7 are Chonda cousins. Chinese manufacturers have taken an old Honda design (CG-124/150), increased the engine displacement to 229cc, and mass-produced it.
The engine design for the Hawk 250, Brozz 250, TBR7, etc., etc., are the same. Just some have differences between the manufactures. The Hawk comes in a version (RPS Hawk DLX 250) that is fuel injected, while the TBR7 is carbureted.
All seem to have the same overall design allowing many Hawk 250 upgrades to the TBR7 and vice-versa. ( Hawk 250 vs. TBR7 ) However, there are differences between the engines/motorcycles, so research any upgrades before investing time and money.
Would You Buy The TaoTao TBR7 Over Again?
Yes. The motorcycle has been a great learning platform not just for riding a motorcycle but maintaining a motorcycle. As well learning about upgrading a motorcycle ( Recommended: TBR7 Upgrades ).
So Why The “My TaoTao TBR7 Is A Dirt Bike!” Post?
I plan to turn back the clock on the appearance of my motorcycle, making the TBR7 look more like a dual-sport and suitable for the dirt. Make it look like how I received it, not in parts, but as a dirt bike.
I plan on reinstalling the dirt bike handguards, for both function and look.

With my newest Grom Clone, my Boom Vader ( My 2nd Chinese Motorcycle, A Grom Clone, Ordered. (My Timeline) ), I can make my in-town bike, and the TBR7 can be more focused on dirt bike adventures or adventure bike-like adventures.
Follow along. I will be doing the upgrade on the TBR7 and putting back on the side panels and fender to make it look like a dirt bike again.
Wish me luck!

TBR7 Upgrades
Hi I’m Tom, A New Motorcycle Rider and Blog Author.
I am a new motorcycle rider(Pa Motorcycle Learner’s Permit at the end of 2020, and I received a full M-Class Pa Motorcycle License in 2021, only after passing the Pa Motorcycle Safety Course).
I bought my first motorcycle, a TaoTao TBR7 (A Chinese Dual-sport motorcycle), at the beginning of 2021 and have been doing upgrades on that motorcycle since.
I added to my motorcycle collection by buying a Boom Vader Gen 2 motorcycle in 2022, and that little Grom-Clone bike has been upgraded by me as well.
I continue to ride my Boom Vader Gen 2 motorcycle as well as my TaoTao TBR7 dual-sport bike.

Fun Fact: I’ve only been on one group ride.
I too carry a mascot on my bike, but it’s a mini storm trooper :P
Yes, my riding buddy Mr. I-Need-Coffee was found at a garage sale ( Looking For Motorcycle Riding Buddies… ). Been a good buddy, always willing to go for a ride.
Now I ride dirty, sometimes aiming for puddles. A white storm-trooper might not look so white after awhile. Dirt on Mr. I-Need-Coffee only adds to his personality. :D
